Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the world, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women every year and affecting countries at all levels of modernization, according to the World Health Organization.

Some facts about breast cancer:
  • In her lifetime one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer
  • Breast cancer in women is the most frequently diagnosed cancer.
  • Breast cancer among women is the second leading cause of death from cancer.
  • More than 252,710 women in the United States are estimated to be diagnosed with breast cancer each year and more than 40,500 die.
  • Despite the fact that breast cancer is rare in men, an estimated 2,470 men are diagnosed with breast cancer and about 460 die each year.
  • A woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 2 minutes on average and one woman dies of breast cancer every 13 minutes.
  • Today in the United States, more than 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive.

We have seen a gradual reduction in incidence rates of female breast cancer among women aged 50 and older in recent years, possibly coinciding with the decline in prescriptive hormone replacement therapy after menopause. Breast cancer death rates have declined since about 1990, partly due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness and continuous improvement of treatment options. However, if detected early enough, the chances of survival of breast cancer are very high, this is not always the case for women with unclear findings. In order to help diagnose women who get abnormal image findings as soon as possible, a diagnostic tool is needed to work alongside imagery.
