Why Breast ultrasound for breast density

Dense breast is the condition of breast when the proportion of fibrous connective tissues is more than the fatty tissues, mammogram determines breast density but not  necessarily any breast lump or hidden sign of cancer are found.
Therefore for an overall scan of breasts inside, Breast ultrasound or ultrasound, popularly known as sonography, is best.

How Ultrasound Imaging works for the breasts?

This technique uses sound waves for producing an image of dense breast tissue.  High frequency sound waves are used which travel through a small probe (Transducer), on which a gel is placed and directly touches the body. Sound waves are collected back by the transducer and these sound waves create the image of the organs (Breast)  inside on the computer screen.

Advantages of breast ultrasound
  • Images are created in real-time; therefore the movement inside the organ is also visible.
  •  Ultrasound does not use radiation and is therefore safe and painless.
  • Ultrasound of breast gives pictures of internal structure of breasts.
  • Ultrasound can be used for women who are at high cancer risk and can’t go for Magnetic imaging resonance i.e breast MRI.

Thus, going for breast ultrasound for dense breast tissue is a good way out.
