Your first mammogram

A mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer as soon as possible for most women.
It may be stressful to get your first mammogram. It's your first one after all, so you don't really know what to expect. Rest assured that even women may be worried about getting their second or third mammogram. But you can eliminate some of the guesswork by learning how to prepare for and what to expect from this important cancer screening exam. And, that may make your experience less nervous. This is what you ought to know.

Don't discard your mammogram. A mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer as soon as possible for most women. This is because a mammogram uses low-dose x-rays to create a breast tissue picture. It detects too small lumps to be felt. Experts recommend that women be given a mammogram at an average risk each year starting at age 40. Women with a higher risk of breast cancer should talk to their doctor about when mammograms should start.

  • If you have not started menopause, after your menstrual period, for the week. Usually your breasts are less tender than that.
  • Schedule your appointment early in the day as you are unable to wear deodorant, powder, lotion or ointment around your chest. They may look like a breast problem on the x-ray if you apply any of these items.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit to remove your top. You'll be given a gown by the person doing your mammogram.

Bring the doctor’s name, address and phone number. The facility will subsequently send a report to your doctor.
