Women with Dense Breast Tissue have Higher Breast Cancer Rate

Doctors typically recommend screenings for breast cancer and other types of health screenings based on the risk of specific diseases for a patient.
Some factors like age, genetics, early menstrual periods, late or no pregnancy, late menopause, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of breast cancer for a woman.

Most of the earlier studies were based on subjective interpretations of radiologists using the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS). While BI-RADS provides guidance to radiologists, it still leaves room for variations in the categorization of breast tissue density by radiologists. These categorization variations are important in determining the association between breast tissue density and biopsy rates, recalls for mammogram follow-up, and breast cancer. The results of the new study show the use of a new automated technique and show an association between dense breast tissue and rates of biopsy, recalls and increased breast cancer odds.

Cancer is a group of rapidly growing unhealthy cells that can begin in one part of the body and spread to other parts. Breast cancer can begin to spread to the lymph nodes and other parts of the body in the breast tissue. In finding breast cancer, mammography is very good. Experts say mammography's sensitivity ranges from 75 to 90 %. That means that mammography detects 75 to 90% of the time breast cancer.
