The laws of breast density are applied in 30 states of
America. Breast density laws vary, but women who undergo mammography should be
aware of the risks of breast density.
The purpose of the law - to provide women with the
information they need for future action, if they have dense breast tissue.
According to ACR, dense breast tissue makes it difficult to evaluate a tumor on
a mammogram.
"A method for the exchange of information is
critical," said Richard Frank, founding member of the Radiological Society
of the Biometric Imaging Alliance of North America and medical director of
Siemens Healthcare North America a, “Perhaps it would be wise not to send a
letter by mail, instead giving it to them, and have the opportunity to speak.”
According to Frank, an example of the language used
inefficiently in some states, raises more questions than answers. In these
letters, they say, "If you have a big breast, and what are your options,"
then the woman will look at this letter and say, "Why, I received this
letter," "It is not clear if you have breasts great or not, and they
do not tell you about their specific situation, "Frank said.
It’s better to write: "You are receiving this letter
because dense breast tissue is very common and it is not abnormal, but dense
breast tissue can complicate the search for cancer through mammography," -
he said it is a condition that often overlooked. Frank emphasized that these
recommendations explain why it would be a good idea to subject women to other
imaging techniques. "And the letter says the opposite: even dense breast
tissue, which can increase the risk of breast cancer."
The CAB has provided resources for doctors who want to learn more about the laws of breast density. Besides, there are examples of
letters that have not been prepared for the use or adaptation of doctors.
Connecticut was the first state law regarding the report on
breast density in 2009. After that, many states will prevail.
