What Does The Personal History Of Breast Cancer Conveys?

If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, you are three to four times more prone to develop new breast cancer.
This risk is distinct from the risk of original  cancer returning (called risk of recurrence).

Measures to follow
If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, you might already take medication to boost your immune system for not developing new breast cancer. There are a variety of lifestyle choices you can make to help maintain the risk as low as possible, which include
  • Quitting smoking
  • Limiting alcohol
  • Periodic workout
  • Eating nutritious meals
  • Keeping healthy weight

There are other options along with these lifestyle choices that can alleviate both your risk of recurrence and developing new cancer.

Hormonal Therapy Medicines
Hormonal therapy medications such as an aromatase inhibitor or SERM (selective modulators of estrogen receptors) may help minimize the risk of:

  • Hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer returning back
  • Development of a new hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer

Avoid products containing progesterone or estrogen
If breast cancer has been diagnosed, you should not use HRT (hormone replacement therapy) to address menopausal symptoms or methods of birth control that include progesterone and/or estrogen hormones.

Screening
If you have breast cancer diagnosed, you and your doctor should create a screening program customized to your distinct situation. These may include:

  • A monthly breast self-examination
  • An annual digital mammogram
  • An annual MRI scan
