Breast density in a female is common. Women having the age of 40 have a high chance of getting diagnosed with breast cancer. The dense breast is a serious issue because its consequence is nothing less than breast cancer. A fight against breast cancer is been fought for quite a time. There are many steps are been taken by the governments of various nations, The World Health Organization and FDA as well. Various treatment is been done to prevent breast cancer in its dense breast stage.

 

Dense breast

Dense breast refers to the amount of dense tissue in comparison to the fatty tissue. The breast consists of two tissues that are dense tissue and fatty tissues (non-dense tissues) Doctor uses a mammogram to find out the abnormalities in the breasts.  

 

What is dense breast law?

On 28th March 2019, for the interest of the patients, the FDA announced mammography facilities must include breast density information in reports sent to patients and their physicians. Some important guidelines need to be followed by both the patient and the doctor who is or will do dense breast treatment.

 

There are various treatment is being done for the dense breast such as: -

 

Mammography

Mammography is being done by a radiologist with the help of the mammogram. In which a doctor uses a Mammogram to find out the dense breast in the female. A mammogram uses x- rays to see the images under the female breast, which will give the doctor a clear view in the monitor about the dense breast tissues looks white while fatty tissues look dark. If the breast density is high then it will become very hard for the doctors to find the abnormalities or tumour in the breast through a mammogram, because then they also look white.

 

Breast MRI

Breast MRI is a tool which is used to find the breast abnormalities. It is a replacement tool for the mammogram because it gives a good view of the breast by giving a bunch of images that will help the doctor to have a detailed view of the breast.

 

Tomosynthesis

Tomosynthesis is also known as 3-D Mammography. It gives a 3-dimensional image of the breast which helps the doctor to examine the dense breasts in a detailed manner.

TyrerCuzick is a modern tool which is used by the doctors, in which doctors asks a series of questions, which will help the doctor having proper information regarding the treatment.

 

Breast ultrasound

When doctors look in a mammogram, one of the first thing they evaluate is the Breast density. By that, they get to know about the amount of glandular tissue compared to the amount of fatty tissue. The fatty tissue looks darker in a mammogram, while glandular looks white. Small breast cancer also looks white. So it can become hard to find the breast cancer on dense breast as compared to the fatty breast.

High breast density can leads to high risk of breast cancer. According to the study in the journal cancer Epidiology, biomakers and prevention found that, younger femalestend to have higher breast density as compared to older women.

Breast MRI

Most of the women don't have the accurate sense of developing the breast cancer. Breast cancer can develop in a women as they get older. For the women who have very risk of getting cancer are the appropriate candidate for Breast MRI.

MRI uses magnetic field to capture multiple images of breast tissue. These images are combined to create a detailed image of breasts.

Tomosynthesis

Tomosynthesis is actually amammography. It’s a type of mammography or it’s a next step of mammography. It uses 3-D image instead of 2-D image. Which help the doctor to take detailed 15 images which was 1 in mammogram. Instead of 1 image, computer took all those 15 images and synthesize them into 3-D volume.

Importance of Breast Compression

One reason some women avoid getting a mammogram is the discomfort they may experience from breast compression during a mammogram. Compression, or “squishing,” of the breast is used to reduce and equalize breast thickness. This allows for a better quality image and a more accurate read by the radiologist. Women may experience some discomfort from compression, but it is necessary to produce a good, readable mammogram.

Compression of the breast helps in:

·         It reduces the radiation dose by decreasing the thickness of the breast.

·         It prevents movement, which helps reduce blurriness and eliminate the need for additional imaging.

·         It separates the breast tissue, allowing for optimal evaluation of lesions that might be obscured by other tissue.

·         It helps in providing uniform thickness to all areas of the breast.

·         Diminishing scatter radiation.

·         Increasing detail by bringing the breast as close as possible to the imaging device.

Be sure to ask your technologist if you have additional questions about compression or other imaging topics.

Though there are various Mammograms which can help the Radiologist to have a detailed view of the breast such as Breast Ultrasound, 3D Mammography, Breast MRI all are described by the doctor. The initial Breast abnormalities can be found with the help of a Mammogram. That’s why doctors advice to have annual Mammography for women.

How does mammogram spot the difference?

Mammogram shows the difference between fat tissue and denser tissue which has more of the radiographical image of water. And fat tissue, on the other hand, looks darker. So if a mammogram sees a lot of white in the entire breast, then it will be hard to find cancer. And that’s what we called High Breast Density. Some women who have very dense tissue in their breast, there will be a chance of cancer in there that we can’t see in the mammogram. It's Because of the density of tissue around it.

It is another option, we can use to find breast cancer. It uses sound waves to find out the probable areas found on a mammogram.

 

3D Mammography

It’s a new weapon in the war against breast cancer 3-D mammography is used. 3-D Mammography may seem like a mammogram, but it is different. Because it collects extra information and gives a 3-D set of images. It helps the doctor to see and search the tissue through one-millimeter layer.

 

Tomosynthesis

In this a series of question is asked by the doctor to the patient which will have them clear idea of their probability of having a dense breast.
